Lester Gomez claims that if the photographed containers were genuine Zyklon B cans, chemical residue inside them would cause the cameraman to “drop dead.”

Zyklon B consisted of a carrier material that released highly volatile hydrogen cyanide gas. Its lethal effect depended upon releasing enough gas to create a dangerous concentration inside an enclosed space. An emptied container preserved more than eighty years later isn’t a permanently loaded chemical weapon.

More importantly, Gomez’s argument makes no logical sense. These cans are preserved as historical evidence of the product used at Auschwitz. Nobody claims they remain full, active or capable of killing museum visitors today.

A spent cartridge can help document a shooting without remaining capable of firing another bullet. By Gomez’s reasoning, if the empty casing doesn’t shoot the investigator, the murder never happened.
